In the state of Georgia, child custody will be determined according to what is in the best interest of the child. The parents may opt for an arrangement of either joint or sole legal and physical custody. There is however no custody preference based on gender under the law in the state of Georgia. In addition, if he or she is officially mature, the child may choose the parent with whom he or she would like to live.
Georgia Child Support Guidelines
Both parents are expected to provide support through the child’s 18th birthday. If a child graduates from high school after his or her 18th birthday, the parents will be expected to assist in financial support up until the date of graduation. Assistance with college expenses may be included as part of the divorce settlement and this should be addressed when filing the divorce papers.
